A. An Overview of Medical Billing
Medical billing and insurance billing are different procedures. In the U.S. Medical billing is done as a service to medical practices to reduce insurance payouts. In the U.S. medical practice bills insurance companies for services rendered, to the extent they are covered by insurance. Insurance companies bill patients for services rendered that are not covered by insurance. Insurance billing is done when a service is not covered by insurance. Insurance billing of non-covered services is for the purpose of recovering the cost of these services to the insurance company. The billed amount is reduced by the amount of insurance payments received. Insurance billing of covered services is done to the extent that the patient has paid for the service. If a patient is covered for services rendered, insurance billing is done to the extent of the amount of covered services.
As the name implies, insurance billing is used to recover insurance payouts from patients. Billing is done after a service is rendered and the patient has been billed for the service. Insurance billing is typically done within 14 days after services are rendered. Insurance billing can also be done at a later date if the patient is not billed within the time allowed by insurance companies.
In contrast, medical billing is a service to medical practices that improves cash flow for medical practices. Medical practices bill medical insurance companies when a service is rendered and the insurance company is not paying for that service. Medical practices can also bill patients directly when a service is rendered.
The U.S. government has attempted to standardize billing and payment for medical services. The U.S. government has required the U.S. medical system to use a uniform billing system. The government has enacted laws that require all medical practices to use uniform billing and payment systems.
B. Medical Billing Systems
